TIGERVILLE, S.C. — The Barton College men’s volleyball team continued to feel right at home in NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas on Friday night, recording its second sweep in three conference matches with a 25-23, 25-18, 29-27 victory over North Greenville University.
Barton, the 2017 Conference Carolinas regular-season and tournament champion, moved to 3-5 overall and 3-0 within the conference. North Greenville was dropped to 5-5 and 2-1 in league play.
The Bulldogs emerged from a tightly contested first set that featured 15 ties, hitting .333 in the opener. Barton’s attack percentage peaked at .524 in the second set en route to a .390 average over three sets.
Junior Vasilis Mandilaris led the way with 14 kills, while sophomore and brother Angelos Mandilaris had 10. Junior Aleksa Brkovic tallied nine kills.
Barton grabbed the final two points of the opening set, using a Vasilis Mandilaris kill and a ball handling error from North Greenville.
In the second set, Barton separated from a 10-9 cushion with a 7-0 run. Three aces were key during the spurt, with redshirt sophomore Oscar Florentino getting back-to-back aces and Lord notcvhing one.
The Bulldogs were extended in the third set, rallying from down 22-20 to take a one-point lead. From 23-23, the teams exchanged points until 27-27, where consecutive Vasilis Mandilaris kills ended the match.
North Greenville, led by Jackson Gilbert’s 11 kills, hit at a .200 clip. Fiorentino, from his setter position, had 41 assists for the Bulldogs.
Barton remains on the road to face Limestone on Saturday.
