Barton stopped twice at Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. — The Barton College women’s volleyball team was subjected to a rude introduction in the USC Aiken Invitational on Friday evening.

The Lady Bulldogs from the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas were thumped by both Lander and USC Aiken. After falling 21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 15-7 to Lander, Barton was swept 25-11, 25-14, 25-16 by USC Aiken.

Barton emerged with a 2-5 record, while Lander improved to 4-2 and USC Aiken won for the fifth time in six matches.

Against Lander, the Lady Bulldogs amassed 57 kills, including 27 from Kaytlin Elkins and 11 from Miranda Miller. Angelica Acevedo handed out a whopping 48 assists.

Ashley Owen and Riley Bane each served for a pair of aces, while Bane was Barton’s digs leader with 39. Bane was complemented by Owen with 24, Acevedo with 19 and Miller with 12. Allie Cullens notched four blocks.

Barton was hampered by 41 attack errors as compared to 22 for Lander.

Lander got 16 kills from Hannah Hritz and 12 each from Reyonia Whipple and Dale Rogers. Sophia Perkins led with 23 assists, while Nell Copeland had 20. Leading the way in digs were Hannah McNanus with 29, Kirstin Martindale with 27 and Megan Faris with 25.

Attack errors continued to plague the Lady Bulldogs against USC Aiken. Barton totaled 26 as compared to 10 for USC Aiken.

Elkins paced Barton with eight kills, while Acevedo recorded 20 assists. Bane responded with 24 kills, followed by Acevedo with 19. Barton was without a service ace while USC Aiken recorded eight.

Tops in kills for USC Aiken was Julia Forster with 10. Emily Teelon notched 18 assists. Rebecca Martinez responded with 27 kills. The victors hit for a .520 percentage the opening set as compared to .027 for Barton. The Lady Bulldogs’ percentage would continue to dip the next two sets.
