MURFREESBORO — The Barton College women’s soccer team and host Chowan University battled 110 minutes (regulation 90 minutes and a pair of 10-minute overtimes) before Chowan emerged with a 2-1 NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas victory Wednesday.
The Lady Bulldogs fell to 3-2-3 in the conference and to 4-5-3 against all foe. Chowan improved to 5-1-1 and 7-1-2, respectively.
Junior Laisy Scardazzi produced the Barton goal with just under a minute left in the first half. Her header off a free kick staked Barton to a 1-0 lead. The goal was Scardazzi’s fifth. Sophomore Laura Franco was credited with her second assist after playing the ball to the middle of the box.
The Lady Hawks controlled the pace in the second half, peppering senior Barton goalkeeper Haley Sauls for six shots on net. Sauls kept Barton in front until Chowan’s Rebekah Langley, a sophomore from Fike High, converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
Chowan’s Carolina Lucci drilled the golden goal in the 104th minute on a breakaway after getting behind the Lady Bulldogs’ defense. Lucci notched her team-leading 13th goal.
Sauls, in the first overtime, stopped a shot rocketed by the Lady Hawks’ Mackenzie Immura.
In the final minutes of regulation, Barton senior Nikki Helton’s attempt was denied by Chowan keeper Olivia Borer. Lucci worked into position for a pair of golden opportunities — which were handled by Sauls.
Chowan posted a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 5-3 margin in corner kicks. Sauls finished with eight saves, while Chowan’s Borer managed six.
The Lady Bulldogs continue conference play at home at 2 p.m. Saturday against Emmanuel (Georgia) College.
