The Barton College women’s team christened the sport of soccer at Electric Supply Company field Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 season-opening victory against Coker (South Carolina) College.

The picturesque Electric Supply facility is the football home of the Bulldogs, who begin competition in September 2020.

The occasion also marked a memorable debut for Rachel Cox, a freshman from Hunt High School. Cox drew the start in goal, got credit for the shutout and posted one save.

The match also started the tenure of first-year head coach Andy McNab.

Lady Bulldogs junior forward Olivia Bronson knocked in the first goal of the season with just 10 minutes, five seconds elapsed. Junior forward Syaani Harris notched the assist on Bronson’s goal, which found the back of the net in the bottom left corner.

Harris drilled in a goal, as did senior midfielder Katie Christiansen with a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

The Lady Bulldogs owned a whopping 28-4 margin in shots.

Barton of the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas hosts UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
