The Barton College women’s team christened the sport of soccer at Electric Supply Company field Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 season-opening victory against Coker (South Carolina) College.
The picturesque Electric Supply facility is the football home of the Bulldogs, who begin competition in September 2020.
The occasion also marked a memorable debut for Rachel Cox, a freshman from Hunt High School. Cox drew the start in goal, got credit for the shutout and posted one save.
The match also started the tenure of first-year head coach Andy McNab.
Lady Bulldogs junior forward Olivia Bronson knocked in the first goal of the season with just 10 minutes, five seconds elapsed. Junior forward Syaani Harris notched the assist on Bronson’s goal, which found the back of the net in the bottom left corner.
Harris drilled in a goal, as did senior midfielder Katie Christiansen with a penalty kick in the 74th minute.
The Lady Bulldogs owned a whopping 28-4 margin in shots.
Barton of the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas hosts UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Barton drops pair in Queens tourney
CHARLOTTE — The Barton women’s volleyball team served into the 2019 season with a pair of losses in the Queens Fall Classic on Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs of the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas opened with 25-14, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16 defeat against Queens University and, next, dropped a 25-17, 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 15-10 marathon to Francis Marion University.
In the opener, Barton was led by junior Kaytlin Elkins, first-team all-conference last season, with 16 kills. Sophomore setter Sarah Kirk added 22 assists and seven digs.
Barton pulled even with a second-set win but succumbed the next two sets.
In the second match, the Lady Bulldogs could not finish after ruling sets Nos. 2 and 3 to build a 2-1 margin.
Elkins again emerged a Lady Bulldogs mainstay with 15 kills. Freshman outside hitter Allison Gambill notched 11 kills and 11 digs.
Head coach Jeff Lennox’s Barton team next competes in the USC Aiken Invitational next Friday against Shorter (2:30 p.m.) and Auburn-Montgomery (7:30).
