ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The Barton College baseball team’s 2019 rallying cry is becoming a better team every day.

And maybe the wins will come.

The latter didn’t happen in a season-opening doubleheader against Flagler University of the NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference on Saturday.

Flagler dealt the Bulldogs of Conference Carolinas a 11-0 loss in the opening game and outslugged second-year head coach Jim Chester’s club 15-8 in the second game.

The Bulldogs, in the second game, owned a 4-1 lead until Flagler exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against three Barton pitchers. Flagler, which shelled Barton pitching for 20 hits, struck for seven runs in the eighth.

Barton banged out 10 hits, including two each from left fielder Jacob Marcos, right fielder Troy Maslowski, third baseman Gatlin Pate and catcher Brayden Olsen. Junior shortstop JoJo Allen slugged Barton’s first 2019 home run, a solo shot.

Starting Bulldogs pither Colby Shimmel worked five effective innings, allowing six hits, one run and three walks while striking out four. Right-hander Alex Hart took the loss.
