FLORENCE, S.C. — The visiting Barton College softball team traded shutout wins with Francis Marion University in an NCAA Division II nonconference doubleheader on Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs of Conference Carolinas prevailed 4-0 in the opener, but Francis Marion of the Peach Belt Conference bounced back to punish Barton 18-0 in five innings.

Barton departed with a 13-16 record, while the Lady Patriots emerged 22-8.

In the opener, Barton sophomore pitcher Hannah Jones blanked the Lady Patriots by spacing eight hits, issuing no walks and striking out five. Jones notched her fifth win against four losses.

The Lady Bulldogs backed Jones with an eight-hit offensive, pushing across one run in the third, two in the fifth and one in the seventh. Only one run was earned.

Junior Brittany Jacobs collected three of the Barton hits in four at-bats. Left fielder Sydney Speight, a senior from Beddingfield High, continued to sparkle with a 2-for-2 performance that included her fifth stolen base. Freshman third baseman Sierra Hearp drove in the two fifth-inning runs.

But in the finale, Francis Marion shelled losing pitcher Hearp (6-4) and two relievers for 22 hits. The Lady Patriots plated at least two runs in each of their four at-bats before the mercy rule was enforced.

Catcher Chelsea Welty went 3 for 3 with two doubles and six runs batted in.

Shania Dominque turned in a 4-for-4 outing and drove in two runs. Third baseman Sam Chiudina batted 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Right fielder Rayni Newman slugged a three-run home run.

Winning pitcher Samantha Wroblewski (8-1) allowed only one hit in a four-inning stint.

Senior infielder Taylor Bowden singled for Barton’s lone hit.

The Lady Bulldogs visit Southern Wesleyan for a CC doubleheader Friday.
