For the fifth time in eight NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas women’s soccer matches, Barton College was extended into overtime on a Thursday night when it honored seniors Laisy Scardazzi, Aryanna Fahnestock, Marcenzie Christensen, Jordyn Brown and Ellen Jayne on the Barton Complex pitch.
The Lady Bulldogs were dealt a 2-1 loss by Chowan University. Chowan netted the golden goal in the second minute of overtime.
Barton tumbled to 1-3-1 in the overtime outcomes and emerged 2-5-1 in the conference and 6-6-1 overall. Chowan improved to 5-3-1 and 6-5-1, respectively.
Barton continues conference play on Homecoming weekend, welcoming Lees-McRae at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
After trailing for nearly 80 minutes, the Lady Bulldogs knotted the score at 1-1 with 85 seconds left in regulation. Junior Rebekah Beal notched her second 2018 goal unassisted. Beal lofted the ball over Chowan goalkeeper Olivia Borer, who came out of goal.
Barton threatened first in overtime on a shot from sophomore Syanni Harris.
But 24 seconds later, the match was over. The Lady Hawks’ Sydney Henderson, from the right, crossed the ball to the middle of the box to Carolina Lucci. Lucci chipped a shot past freshman Barton goalkeeper Kianna Webb, who had relieved junior Megan Bolick.
Lucci netted Chowan’s first goal in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a Lady Bulldogs’ mistake. Lucci found an empty net after a save and a misplay from Barton keeper Bolick.
With Harris generating two other opportunities, Barton owned a 13-9 margin in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. The Lady Bulldogs got two saves from Bolick and three from Webb. Chowan’s Borer notched seven saves.
