Backyard wrestlers win Greco-Roman state championship

WINSTON-SALEM — Led by five double gold-medal champions, the Backyard Wrestling Club of Wilson and Rocky Mount claimed the Greco-Roman championship last weekend at the North Carolina Wrestling Association/USA Wrestling’s 46th annual State Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships.

Additionally, Backyard Wrestling Club finished second in the Freestyle division.

The BWC members who won championships in each division were Christian Decatur in the Cadet 100-pound weight class, Andrew Jacobs (Cadet, 106), Aaron Bancroft (Cadet, 152), Vyshun Richardson (Junior, 182) and Kendrick Watson (Junior, 285). Picking up gold medals in the Greco-Roman division for BWC were Barrett Klutey (Schoolboy, 105), Timothy Decatur (Junior, 120) and Vincent Price (Cadet, 132).

In Freestyle, Klutey and Timothy Decatur placed second in their respective divisions. Other BWC medalists were Patrick King (Freestyle Junior, second), Trevon Hatch (Freestyle Cadet, second), Noah Vasquez (Freestyle Junior, fourth), Taylor Gay (Greco-Roman Cadet, fourth), Tanner Klutey (Freestyle Junior, fourth) and Jesus Reya (Greco-Roman, fourth).

In claiming the Greco-Roman team title, Backyard total 127.5 points to 112.5 by runner-up Greenville Titan Wrestling Club. Strong and Courageous Wrestling Club of Asheville was third.

Strong and Courageous won the Freestyle crown with 134 points to Backyard’s 115 while Charlotte’s Darkhorse Wrestling Club was third with 110.

Backyard wrestlers will compete in a dual tournament in Virginia on May 13-14.
