GOLDSBORO — The Greenfield School varsity baseball team got 12 strikeouts on the mound and three runs batted in at the plate from sophomore Nathan Woodard to defeat 1-A/ 2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference opponent Wayne Christian on the road, 8-1, on Monday.

Woodard got the win after pitching 5 2/3 innings to allow no hits one unearned run and five walks. Woodard doubled home Justin Holland in the fourth inning and, in the fifth inning, he rapped a two-RBI single.

Holland was 2 for 3. The Knights (3-0 in the conference and 9-5 overall) scored their first three runs without a hit.

Greenfield continues conference play in Raleigh on Thursday against Friendship Christian.

Rams rally past Roanoke Rapids

BETHEL — The Greene Central varsity baseball team will bid to complete a perfect showing in the Pitt County Easter Invitational high school baseball tournament when its opposes Pamlico County at noon Tuesday.

The Rams of the 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference capitalized on a seven-run second inning to turn back 2-A Roanoke Rapids, 8-2, for its second win. Greene Central, now 9-8, opened with a win against North Pitt, 5-3 in eight innings, on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets victimized by sloppy play, suffered their fifth loss against 12 wins. Greene Central managed but five hits but capitalized on nine walks and two Roanoke Rapids errors.

Seniors A.J. Dupree, Jalin Connor and Trey Fields, junior Zach Taylor and sophomore Nathan Baker collected the Greene Central hits. Dupree doubled and scored two runs.

Rams pitchers Dylan Benton, a senior, and Dupree combined to limit the Jackets to four hits. In 5 1/3 innings, Benton, the winner, permitted three hits, two earned runs and six walks. He struck out four.
