Junior Lauren Pate hammered down 22 kills Tuesday night as the Community Christian School varsity volleyball team halted a three-game losing streak by defeating 1-A/2-A Coastal Independents Conference rival Halifax Academy 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 16-14 at Peace Church.

The Lady Cyclones, now 3-8 overall and 3-6 in CIC play, claimed the first two sets, only to see Halifax rally to win the third and fourth sets. From a 14-14 tie in the fifth and deciding set, the Lady Cyclones put away the final two points to escape and claim the match.

Pate had a double-double, picking up 10 service points to go along with her team-high kills. Sophomore Makayla Webb finished with nine service points and six aces, with junior setter Kayla Farmer getting 23 assists and six service points.

Senior Morgan Garner collected 12 service points, five assists and three aces. Abigail Jackson, an eighth grader, had 10 service points. Junior Logan Woodard was the fourth CCS player to eclipse the double-digit mark in service points, swatting four aces.

 Junior Shaelyn Harold had eight kills.

Halifax Academy remained winless through 11 matches, five within the confines of CIC play.

The Lady Cyclones visit Lawrence Academy on Monday.



Ladybirds drop Red Rams 6-2

STANHOPE — The Southern Nash High girls tennis team returned to 3-A Big East Conference action Tuesday and pulled off a 6-2 victory over Franklinton.

Southern Nash (7-4, 1-2 Big East), with its all-senior starting lineup, picked up singles wins from Stacie Winner at No. 1, Brandi Curtis at No. 3, Alexis Mendez at No. 4 and Karli Pernell at the No. 5 singles spot. Curtis, who defeated Franklinton’s Carter Gilliam 6-1, 6-0, won her eighth match in nine outings.

At No. 5, Pernell split tiebreakers with the Red Rams’ Emma Styers before prevailing 10-2 in the decisive third-set tiebreaker.

The Ladybirds won two doubles matches, including Winner-Curtis at No. 1, Katelyn Cox-Mendez at No. 2. Pernell-Lesly Rodriguez at the No. 3 seed didn’t finish their match.

Franklinton fell to 2-5 in all matches, 0-4 within the Big East.

Southern Nash plays host to Fike on Thursday.

United tops Lady Chargers in four sets

The Wilson Christian volleyball team captured the opening set from DASH Homeschool on Tuesday afternoon, but DASH, deploying its varsity unit, pulled away over the remaining three sets to notch a 20-25, 25-15, 25-9, 25-16 victory.

Sophomore Paige Barnes had 11 digs and seven kills for the Lady Chargers (5-4). Peyton Norville, a freshman, had 18 digs and seven kills for WCA, while freshman Jennifer Edmondson posted 31 digs to lead the Lady Chargers defense. Another freshman, Reagan Barnes, had 15 digs.

WCA plays host to Greenville Christian on Friday.
