Wilson police are investigating a shooting that left a 63-year-old man dead early Monday morning.
Police responded to a 1:30 a.m. shots fired call at 411 Stadium St.
When officers arrived they found Evard Earl Artis lying in the front yard of his Stadium Street home suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Capt. Kendra Howell.
She said officers and emergency personnel attempted life-saving efforts on Artis but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have classified the incident as a homicide investigation.
Officials spent Monday following up on leads and processing the crime scene. Police haven’t revealed a motive yet in the killing but said they are continuing to investigate the case.
No arrests have been made yet.
Police also blocked off areas on Stadium Street, Hanover Avenue, Mercer Street and Arrington Avenue. Those streets were opened after lunch on Monday.
On Monday afternoon, police had condensed the crime scene to the area of where the crime occurred, Howell said.
Howell said officers canvassed the immediate area of the neighborhood and talked with residents.
