Nearly two-dozen suspects face more than 70 charges combined after a Wilson County Sheriff’s Office special operation.

Deputies conducted Operation LION — an abbreviation for Law enforcement In Our Neighborhood — which targeted individuals involved in the illegal sale of narcotics, including prescription pills, heroin, cocaine and marijuana.

Detectives arrested multiple people during the operation, which also resulted in the seizure of numerous guns and multiple dosage units of heroin, cocaine and marijuana throughout the course of the investigation on Sept.14, officials said.

The following day, deputies conducted traffic safety stations in all four zones in Wilson, which covers the entire county, according to the sheriff’s office. Those zones included northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 95. During the traffic enforcement campaign, officials filed 40 charges.

“We will continue to conduct illegal drug campaigns, such as Operation LION,” said Wilson County Sheriff Calvin Woodard. “The operation was intended to show our citizens that they should not allow illegal drugs to saturate their neighborhoods and to always be encouraged to stand up against this poison in our streets. I have heard remarks such as ‘We can’t arrest our way out of this problem,’ that drugs are sold in different neighborhoods, counties and states, as well as a new dealer will step in the place of the one arrested.’”

Woodard said regardless of those remarks, the sheriff’s office will continue investigating and arresting those who distribute “this poison in our community.”

“We as law enforcement can’t solve this problem alone, but ask for the community to join together to prevent drugs from hampering the life of our youth and loved ones,” he said. “ We can’t allow this to continue in Wilson County, because our families and children depend on us. The women and men of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office will continue to have the courage to prevent it.”
