Two men were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after an apparent shooting that Wilson police were unable to confirm by press time.

The incident happened a few minutes before 5 p.m. in the 1000 block of Vance Street East.

Police responded to the back of a duplex located at 610-B Carroll St. E. Wilson County EMS personnel carried one man off in a stretcher and a second man in a stair chair.

Both men were conscious and talking to responders. Both appeared to have been injured in the leg or foot. They were taken to Wilson Medical Center.

Police investigators placed at least four evidence markers in the road on Vance Street, which was closed from Carroll Street to Ward Boulevard.

The incident happened at the corner of the athletic field associated with Vick Elementary School. The actual school is one block away on Carrol Street.

“I heard it,” said Maryann Hooks, a Vance Street resident. “It sounded like firecrackers. I didn’t pay it no mind. You hear that all the time around here. I think it sounded like somebody was doing fireworks early. I didn’t see nothing.”

A Wilson Police Department spokesman could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.
